Cogging torque is a result of the interaction between the rotor magnets and stator slotting. This unwanted component of the torque introduces ripple in the output torque, poses higher stress on the machine bearing and produces vibration. There are few methods that are used to achieve cogging torque reduction. They usually compromise motor performance in some way, leading very often to reduced winding EMF.
