HFWorks/ SolidWorks Simulation of a Microwave Ablation Antenna for Snoring Therapy

Thursday, March 23, 2017

In recent years microwave energy has found various applications in medicine and biology. The use of a microwave applicator to heat up a biological tissue such as cardiac muscle, cancer cells, is referred to as microwave ablation. The computer simulation of microwave ablation is very attractive because the actual measurement on biological tissues is rather expensive and may require stringent requirements on animal sacrifice. However, this simulation itself is challenging because of the high loss environment, such as the blood and the tissue, that surround the microwave applicator. Such environment leads to a high reflection at the tissue/applicator interface resulting in poor heating of the tissue.

In this webinar, we will show you how the duo HFWorks and SolidWorks can be used to accurately model the microwave ablation in a phantom model of human mouth cavity to treat a snoring syndrome. Both electrical results such as VSWR and electromagnetic field as well thermal results including the temperature distribution and gradient will be presented and compared to actual measurement data from CT images.
