Motion-Induced Eddy Currents in Magnetic Gears

Even though magnetic gears contain no coils, the relative motion between permanent magnets and conductive steel causes motion-induced eddy currents that significantly affect performance; ignoring these currents leads to overestimated torque and underestimated losses. Accurate analysis must include transient simulation with conductivity and motion, as standard magnetostatic models miss these effects. The note shows that eddy currents oppose magnetic flux changes and reduce torque, so they can’t be ignored in realistic magnetic gear modeling.

This note uses finite-element simulation to study the electromagnetic behavior of a consequent-pole coaxial magnetic gear (CP-CMG) design, where both permanent magnets and consequent (ferromagnetic) poles are used to achieve gear functionality without physical contact. It analyzes torque transmission, flux distribution, and overall performance of this magnetic gear topology to confirm design decisions. The results demonstrate how the consequent-pole configuration affects gear performance and can be evaluated accurately through simulation.
