Force Calculation for Magnetic Circuit With a Movable Piece

In this example we calculate the force exerted on a movable part of the magnetic circuit shown in the figure below. The part of the magnetic circuit that contains the coil is fixed. The moving piece is free to move. The problem has an analytical solution and we will compare between the two methods.

Note the following points:

  • Both the body and the moving part are made of iron and have a cross section S=4 cm2.
  • The coil is made of copper and excited by 300A.
  • The air gaps have different height.
  • Due to the symmetry we model only half the structure.
  • All the dimensions of the structure are in cm.
  • The height of the air gaps are L1 and L2: L1=0.25 cm, L2 = 0.15 cm
