Capacitance Calculation for Two Solid Conductors

The following figure depicts two solid conductors on a substrate bed. It is required to calculate the electrostatic field, the electrical displacement field, the potential, and the capacitance matrix.

Dimension Information

  • The dimensions (in cm) in the X-Z plane are as shown in the figure.
  • Depth in the Y direction = 1.00 cm.
  • Relative permittivity of the substrate = er1 = 4.3 ( FR -4-ED).

Constructing the Model

COSMOS/DesignSTAR supports all popular CAD systems. This model's geometry was constructed in SolidWorks. A box surrounding the structure was built to include 5.0 cm layers of air (from each-conductor) in the X-direction and 10.0 cm (from the top edge) in the Z-direction. As a result, the dimensions of the box surrounding the model are 18 cm in the X direction, 12 cm in the Z direction, and 1.0 cm in the Y direction.

  • The first part is Epsilonr1, which is the substrate.
  • The second part is the air surrounding the structure.

Since the two solids are perfect conductors, there are two methods to handle these conductors

Method 1: The perfect conductors are modeled as voids with a conducting boundary condition assigned to their boundaries.

Method 2:The perfect conductors are modeled as parts of the model with a volume boundary condition assigned to them.

In this example method 1 was used.
